The Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library is located in the town of Frederiksted, St. Croix on Strand Street. 

This historical building built  in 1803, at the south end of Strand Street houses Frederiksted's small library . The former private residence is a fine example of Victorian architecture. 

The Bell family (previous owners) once added bells to the ornamental staircase to represent their children giving the building its nickname.

Ms. Petersen died in 2003 at age 82 and left behind a legacy for the love of reading. She was the founding member of the St. Croix Library Association and was later honored by the 14th Legislature, which named the Frederiksted Library after her in recognition of her role in spearheading its renovation. The Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library is located in the town of Frederiksted, St. Croix on Strand Street.

About Us

Services

The primary focus of the library is to provide free reader services to adults, children, young adults, senior citizens, residents and non-residents. 

Collections

Adult fiction and Non-fiction; Children’s Fiction and Non-fiction; Adult and Children’s References; Magazines; Daily Newspapers; DVDs; High Interest; and Low-Level materials.

Virgin Islands Archives/Records

The library houses original and microfilm collections of V.I. Archives, records, newspapers and other materials; it is capable of reproducing images via microfilming and photocopying. Microfilm reader/printers are available at certain libraries.

VIALS

The Virgin Islands Automated Library System is the database and computerized support network for books, reading materials and patron records for the public library  and archives collections in the Virgin Islands. 

viNGN/Public Computer Center (PCC)

The viNGN Public Computer Centers with high-speed connections provide patrons with free access to the Internet and the World Wide Web.  The Computers, peripherals and contemporary software was funded primarily from a grant by the National Telecommuniations Information Administration (NTIA) as part of the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP). 

The Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library is temporarily closed. The Florence Augusta Williams Public Library, the Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, and the Bookmobile are currently serving the public on St. Croix.
